301 redirect
A 301 redirect permanently sends visitors and search engines from an old URL to a new one, and tells search engines to transfer the old page's ranking signals to the new address.
301 is the HTTP status code for “moved permanently”. A 302 means “moved temporarily” and is meant for short-term changes, so it is the wrong choice when a page has moved for good.
When you need one
A website migration that changes URL structure, for example from Webflow or WordPress to Framer.
Renamed or merged pages and blog posts.
Domain changes, or moving between www and non-www.
The redirect map
A redirect map is a list of every old URL and the new URL it should point to. It is the single most important document in a migration: a missed redirect sends visitors to a 404 page and drops the ranking that page had built up.
Redirect each old URL to its closest equivalent, not everything to the homepage.
Avoid chains, where one redirect leads to another.
Update internal links and hreflang tags to the final URLs.
Framer manages redirects in Site Settings. Trueform builds a full redirect map for every migration and checks it in Search Console after launch. See Switch to Framer.
FAQ
Do 301 redirects hurt SEO?
Not when they point to the right page. Google treats a 301 as a strong signal that the new URL should replace the old one in search results.
How long should I keep 301 redirects?
Keep them as long as possible, at least a year. Old links from other sites and bookmarks keep using the old URLs.
