Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making content more likely to be used and cited by generative AI systems, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity, when they write an answer.

The term was coined in academic research in 2023 and is now used by marketers alongside AEO. In practice both describe the same goal: being the source an AI answer is built on.

What helps with GEO

  • Specific, verifiable facts instead of vague claims.

  • Clear entity information: who you are, where you are, what you offer.

  • Consistent facts across your site, directories and profiles.

  • Citations and sources that an AI system can check.

  • Structured data and fast, crawlable pages.

GEO is not a separate channel you switch on. It is the result of a well-structured marketing website with honest, precise content.

FAQ

Is GEO the same as AEO?

Mostly. GEO usually refers to generative AI models, AEO to answer engines in general, including featured snippets and voice assistants. The work is largely the same.

How do you measure GEO?

By checking whether AI assistants mention and cite your brand for the questions that matter to you, and by tracking referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics.
